Queercore: A Celebration of Outsider Pride

The Urban Pamphleteer team will be present at this event screening of 'Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution' at Genesis Cinema in east London, distributing copies of our latest edition #7 LGBTQ+ Night-time Spaces: Past, Present & Future. Details of the event below.

The People’s Film Club, The Outside Project and Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest are teaming up to bring a night of queer celebration. We will be celebrating the ‘outsider’ subcultures that queer communities have pioneered - creating their own cultural spaces on the fringes of a homophobic and heteronormative society.

The evening will start with an ‘Outsider Exhibition’. We will be taking over Genesis Cinema’s bar, displaying all the placards, banners, and protest paraphernalia from this year’s Outsider Pride bloc. Alongside the exhibition, we will be bringing together all our favourite activist groups and queer creators. There will be stalls by loads of fantastic LGBTQ grassroots groups, fab queer-made stuff for sale, along with pizza, drinks, and music camper than a glitter-covered rainbow. It’s going to be great!

After the festivities, and following an intro to The Outside Project by their incredible team, we will be screening Queercore. The film is a testament to the outsider spirit of the queer community; forever resilient in the face of societal rejection, creating cherished communities where people can truly be themselves. The documentary explores ‘Queercore’, the cultural and social movement that began as an offshoot of punk and was distinguished by its discontent with society's disapproval of the gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender communities.To quote Adam Rathe’s Queer to the Core, “The Queercore scene grew out of a generation that bristled against what it saw as the bourgeois trappings of a mainstream gay lifestyle and the macho, hetero hardcore scene that punk -- a movement founded by women, people of color, and gays -- had become. Queercore was a call to arms and storming out of the closet.” This documentary is not one to miss.

All of this will be to fundraise for The Outside Project, the UK's first LGBTIQ+ community shelter & centre. It is an independent, grassroots project led by queer ex-homeless people, homelessness professionals, community members & activists. The project started out on Status Quo's former tour bus & is now searching for a permanent (and stationary) venue. The money raised on the night will go towards supporting their wonderful work as they begin to prepare for winter.

Pride is a protest. Pride was started by homeless trans women of colour. Let’s remember their legacy, and support our community. There is room here for everyone.
